Cloudy headlights: why it happens and how restoration works

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate — tough, light, and unfortunately porous. From the factory they're protected by a UV coating. Years of sun, heat cycles, and road grit slowly destroy that coating, and the bare plastic underneath oxidizes: first a light haze, then yellow, then genuinely cloudy.

This isn't just about looks. Oxidized lenses can cut your usable light output dramatically — enough to fail inspection in many states. If oncoming signs seem dimmer at night than they used to, your lenses are a likely suspect.

The drugstore wipe kits work for about three weeks. They cut the oxidation but leave the plastic unsealed, so it clouds right back — often worse, because now there's zero protection.

Real restoration is a multi-stage job: wet sanding through progressively finer grits to remove every trace of oxidized material, machine polishing back to full optical clarity, and — the step the kits skip — sealing the lens with a UV-resistant coating so the clarity holds.
